“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath

I was a lot happier with "walk 15 minutes to work" than I ever was with a long commute, but honestly, being in the big city worked against that.

For example, in Manhattan, walking to the park meant that much of the way, there were too many people ahead of me for me to walk at my preferred pace. This was enough of a bother that I think I'd have enjoyed working in a still-walkable smaller city more.

I am very happy with my 15 step commute, but what I miss is the time to listen to my podcasts during the drive.
