#sonTwo and wife are discovering the 1800s, as they have no electricity, minimal and intermittent cellular service, no Internet due to former #hurricane #Irma

I was really tickled during an NPR interview yesterday, correspondent said she was calling from "an old land line" with a mix of disdain and puzzlement in her voice. Yay for resilient infrastructure.

@nds @lnxw48a1 We owe a debt of gratitude to those who erected that technological progress and LEFT IT INTACT.

I worked for a telephone operator contracting company in college, ~2002. They contracted operator services (0/411) to rural phone companies. It was a fascinating job. I had buttons on my keyboard that would produce output on my screen but no longer actually did anything that I could ever discern. It was a weird old system on top of an even weirder, even older system.
