   When I was a kid, there was a boy named Steve who lived down the street. Steve was short and round, so he played catcher for his Little League team. He was on the Pirates, but we always called them pee-rats. Sometimes I wonder if we're the reason he chose a life of crime.

      Though the truth is, his dad had been in prison and his oldest brother had been in juvenile hall, so it wasn't likely us.
