So when people say "heat pump" in English they generally mean air to air?

In Swedish, the typical question when people say they're getting a "vΓ€rmepump", the literal translation, is whether they're getting shallow ground geothermal or bedrock geothermal to replace the pebble or oil boiler in their hydronic system.

I've probably been misunderstanding a lot of discussions.

In Swedish you'd say what translates to "air heat pump", "air heat exchanger" or "reversible AC" if you're talking air-air, as this is the newfangled (<20 years) feasible solution when you don't have a proper hydronic-heated home. Geothermal to hydronic has been around forever and is more efficient.

Better still is district heating (the Swedish translates to "remote heat"), though it depends and some might disagree.

@clacke Yes. Air to air is the only context in which I have heard the term "heat pump".
