I first got my own domain when I was running for public office over a decade ago. I don't currently have ANYTHING on my homepage, yet I keep paying for hosting and domain. I've been surprised how useful I find keeping my own #email. (It's not self-hosting, as I let my hosting provider take care of day-to-day maintenance, so I avoid some of those pitfalls). I particularly appreciate the "family" account that we have set to go to my wife's & my inbox that we list for all the "important" stuff like kids' registration, doctor appointments, electric bills etc.
