      I think CA holds bartenders responsible. I don't do the bar thing, but my understanding is that they intentionally won't serve alcohol to someone who is obviously past a certain point.
      
      I do not know whether that responsibility extends to the person's choice of transportation after their bar visit. I'm sure one can offer to call a taxi, but one cannot force a patron to use said taxi.

Somehow I managed not only to call from my Nokia candybar, but I am pretty sure the barkeep didn't give me the number but I called 1-800-FREE-411 for it. When the cab showed up the driver refused to let me get in because I was too drunk. I'm not sure if he didn't want to risk me puking in his taxi or what, so I ended up driving home drunk, about a mile from the bar, with my two drunk friends. I wrote a nasty letter to the editor of the local paper about it, which is what you did back in those days.
