"Mean Girls" is 20 years old this year and they're releasing a new #MeanGirls this month.
That could be fun, it's a cultural icon, it sounds like a cash grab but viewed charitably it could be good to have a bit of an update, some problematic details written out, etc.
But what they're not mentioning at all in the promotional interviews etc is that it's a *musical* based on the Broadway show. It's a new format and that makes more sense that just a refresher. They even interview the new Regina and mention she was Regina on stage and they still don't mention that the movie is based on the stage show.
I didn't even know there was a Broadway show, but there you go. But why are they not mentioning that it's not the old movie refreshed, it's a different take? Musicals are in! People who go unawares might hate it and musical lovers might miss it, what's the messaging strategy here?
