    the notion of "negative types" got my attention, but I'm afraid that it went way over the top of my head :-(

    I suppose it has nothing to do with signedness, but that reminded me of this oddity I noticed in Java: all of its integral types are signed, but, surprisingly, its classes can be either signed or unsigned
