Hatred, fearmongering, oppression and such things are the tools of fear, of the people who fear what you are, what you represent, what you could do.

It takes a brave person to show compassion to others when it is unpopular, to stick to the principle, to be the light when people wish it to be dark.

I was always driven by the need to understand people, even the bad people, the ones that they told me to stay away from, and perhaps the most terrifying thing you learn as a psychologist is that ultimately, even the worst of us aren't all THAT different from the best of us. And they are all, at the end of the day, human.

Dehumanising them as monsters, as Nazis, as That Bad Label, makes it easy to justify doing things that are just as bad in return to those people, and that is how the disease propogandates itself.

In the end, we are alone with our own actions, and we must live with our choices. Make choices you can live with ... and if you can live with being intentionally malicious to people, to watch them bleed and to watch them cry in anguish, then I suspect you live a life of lying to yourself.

The difference between a drug addict on skid row going nowhere in their lives and a six-figure-earning corporate executive was five years of my life. What most of them need is the opprotunity that I fought so hard to earn.

So next time you see one of those vile, hate-filled, evil people, the Others, instead of focussing on all those negative emotions, perhaps think to yourself, there, but for the grace of God or whatever power there is, go I.

Robin Williams once wrote that the funniest people he knew were also the saddest, that they knew what it was to feel terrible and they did not want others to feel that way. I can't help but feel from my own experience that there is a lot of truth in that. I spent so much of the time after I got off the street trying to help people in the same place be better off, or perhaps even get out of that. I still do when I can.

Much better to create the light you wish to see than banish the darkness.

@maiyannah And that's why I always try to remember that the start of National Socialism was in cultivated victimhood and the blaming of Others as the great Cause and Nemesis.
Mind you, I'm just as bad as others at times.
