I told everyone that Mastodon was just using this as a stepping stone and no one listens, and now there's all the talk of dropping ostatus. Vindication is bittersweet.

Mastodon has always treated federation not as an integral part of the design but rather as a marketing pull and little more. Its been clear for a long time they don't care about comparability with other software, they want everyone using theirs . People going from Twitter to Mastodon are just trading one jail for another.

@maiyannah I don't think so because Mastodon couldn't go back to being a single instance fortress. They could develop their own protocol and have a mastonet, but so long as there is some sort of API then federation would still be a possibility.

@bob I mean that's true of twitter right now. Its still a silo.

@maiyannah I had figured that we would all switch to ActivityPub eventually but I thought GNU social dev was active. (pump.io too)

@internetturtle #Pump.io's new lead dev Strugee is pretty active.
