    @se7en the reason unix won, is because it's worse is better.

    same as Microsoft.

    if Microsoft is also free, it would be the standard for server and protocols too today.

      @se7en and the only reason unix/linux is still used today, is because it's $free$.

      if it is not $free$, it'll be dead over right.

      @xahlee The price certainly contributes to Linux's dominance in extremely price sensitive fields such as shared web hosting and so on, but there are still fields of business where some proprietary (and costs lots of money) Unix derivative is a strong part of the market. (In desktop operating systems, for example, zero-price is not enough to take the market away from an entrenched competitor.)

      It is not guaranteed that Windows would have that market if zero-price Unix-like operating systems were not available.
