#Mastodon really needs a groups feature, preferably one that is compatible with OStatus groups. #Diaspora needs one, too.

These kinds of communication relays are actually really useful in community-building. In a microblogging environment, it's a powerful feature that Twitter doesn't offer.

@deutrino @bobjonkman @hyper Following hashtags is unfortunately a poor substitute with serious communication issues between instances. Main problem is that it's not a relay model - you're just attaching yourself to messages that show up in your stream.

@deadsuperhero absolutely agree that hashtag-following is no substitute for a !banggroup feature. But there is Discourse👌 about the relative merits in the hashtag-following issue, worth a read for people who people invested in getting one or the other implemented I think :) @bobjonkman @hyper

I did not find an option to follow hashtags, that would be a nice feature. I searched or browsed the repo’s other issues to ensure this is not a duplicate.

@deutrino @bobjonkman @hyper It was definitely something we implemented in #Diaspora back in the day.

It's really good for seeing local content from your instance and your remote contacts, but the shortcoming becomes apparent if you're self-hosting your own tiny instance.

@lain @deutrino @bobjonkman @hyper Part of the problem is first indicating where the remote source should be.

In theory, I think you could totally fetch public posts from a specified server containing a tag, and feed it into your stream with some kind of subscription object, but it's partially a UX problem, and partially a resource problem.

At the very least, group relay model is good at provisioning content back-and-forth between where the group object lives, and all the downstream subscribers.

@deadsuperhero @hyper @bobjonkman @deutrino i remember all of this from the same discussion on Diaspora five years ago. I still think that not implementing the simple solution (tag following on specific remote servers , e.g. #toot@mastodon.social) was a mistabe. Everyone waited for the perfect solution that never came.

@lain @deadsuperhero @bobjonkman @deutrino Lain - why not start by implementing it in Pleroma and see if it takes off? Worse case you remove or modify the feature right?

And #RemoteHashtag following can be done by selecting the Atom/RSS feed for a tag on the remote server and adding it to "Settings, Mirroring, Feed URL". https://gs.jonkman.ca/attachment/25187

@deadsuperhero groups, polls and events are three features that I want the most on Mastodon, these are features that I use most often on Facebook.
