So we have "safe speech zones" with a protectionist stance; a few "free speech zones" with a fairly absolute individualist stance; and drama over who federates with whom.

What about an instance list of "open speech zones" which federate widely and also expect their users to adhere to a common sense "don't be a jerk" code of conduct?

That way, users can join an "open speech zone" and be reasonably sure they can talk to people on almost any instance in the fediverse. #openspeech #openspeechzone

@deutrino Having thought of it some more there is actually a better option for the entirety of Mastodon which i would call Circles. It would allow people to create and participate in Circles, some public some private without the Circles being bound to a single instance while they can be hosted on one.

That way they have the choice of federating only some or all circles and the circles themselves can define there own rules and state if they are public or private, and users can block them at will

@deutrino What that would require is something more specific then "Don't be a jerk". It would be a very clear guideline without any room for interpetation. One that allows any viewpoint, any open civil discussion to take place, posts of any kind even provocative but would disallow actual attacks.

For example you could make the base rule that you should not send repeated insults or threats to other users outside of your own circles, especially if its out of context.
