I actually think the article isn't so bad, if you ignore the terrible headline (thanks WIRED.)

There are real problems to be solved with decentralization and simply using "decentralized" as a selling point without other benefits isn't going to cut it.

That said, these small servers serve a niche, and it's nice they can generally communicate with each other. So they (or the network) don't need to be huge. And it doesn't appear that Mastodon is hurting for developers.
