Remember when Google and Facebook took peoples pseudonyms away and insisted online discourse would become civil if people's real names were attached to it? And how it inconvenienced and hurt, activists, trans men and women and many others?

How did that go for people? How much more civil are we finding things?

@clacke @satchmoz As I argued at the time, the most uncivil interactions of most people's lives happen in junior high school / middle school. Their antagonists are known by name and face, and often their home locations and family members are also known. "Real names" do not make people civil, just as the Internet does not make them uncivil. Assholes tend to be assholes anywhere they feel they can do so without consequences, as you can see at your local McDonald's during lunch hour.

@lnxw48a1 @satchmoz Just like @natecull I also thought the whole problem was the http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/greater-internet-fuckwad-theory . Turns out, we as a society adapted and managed to be proud and out assholes.

        Now what.

          from Know Your Meme
The Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory (GIFT) is a postulate which asserts that normal, well-adjusted people may display psychopathic or antisocial behaviors when given both anonymity and a captive audience on the Internet.
