In preparation for Ubuntu 18.04 next year I've also been trying out new desktops in 16.04, seeing as Unity is now being Jettisoned.
I'm currently settling on MATE. It's a bit of a throwback (as a modern port of Gnome 2), but works well. With the BlackMATE theme it looks pretty cool too 😎
