    At the end of four years, there are suddenly hundreds of slightly different computer platforms in use, built a week at a time by hundreds of different people, that are also mostly compatible by design.

      @djsundog this is basically the class 6.004 at MIT, minus the hardware component.

      Although, some people have made Betas (the reference processor for the class) on FPGA. I hear it's a popular soft core to use in later classes because it's free and students are familiar with it. https://mastodon.mit.edu/media/JtBQt2OWCWNUXWgvpt8
