Concerning the question about washing clothes without detergent -- you don't really need to use detergent unless your clothes are exceptionally oily or dirty -- try it! If you soak your clothes in water, then agitate them a little bit by hand, that usually does it. You can use a little white vinegar as a disinfectant if you like. If you can hang them in the sun to dry, that has further disinfectant effect. But detergent is not really necessary.
