Ended up sitting next to a guy on the plane who is a sustainability consultant who has been involved with many environmentally friendly buildings, including one for the high school I went to. He confirmed three things:

1. Most so-called "recycling" is actually horrible for the environment.

2. Reuse or retrofit is almost always more environmentally friendly than replacing.

3. Electric cars are a disaster for the environment because of the batteries. Hybrid cars are not as bad.
