Is the current terminology "Debian Testing" or "Debian Unstable"? #Linux #Debian

@bobjonkman Both, as it's two different things.

@vinzv @bobjonkman the security FAQ has an entry for "testing" and "unstable" https://www.debian.org/security/faq#unstable

@bobjonkman Both exist, they are different. Unstable is more unstable than testing.

Thanx @blp, @vinzv - I found https://www.debian.org/releases/ after giving up on https://debian.org/testing (which doesn't exist, and so I was confused)

@bobjonkman To make it clear: Testing is the rolling branch (which I'm using with absolutely no issues).
Unstable is also very stable (Siduction and some other distributions base on it) but can have some issues.
Both get updated very often which can be annoying if you don't like running updates.

What are the best practices for optimal stability and up-to-date-ness? If I set the repository to /dists/buster/ will it change from 'testing' to 'stable' when buster is released? If I set the repostitory to /dists/testing/ will it continue to be the latest 'testing' when 'buster' becomes stable?

@bobjonkman if you set your repo to buster it will stay there indefinitely (whether it is testing or stable state) as you guessed.

Right now testing is exactly the same as buster since in the repo testing is basically a symlink to the release that is in testing phase, but once buster goes stable they will begin to diverge since testing will be linked to the next release after buster.

You could also set your distro to stable release and add the backport repo to still get some more updates.

@bobjonkman "testing" is before insert package into stable. "unstable" is the first step of tests. Read https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian#Branches for details
