   On the rare occasion that I see someone trip and fall, five kind strangers will always be there in the blink of an eye, to help them up and to check that they're ok.

   As a total novice potato farmer I have a bit of a mystery as to why these two results are so different. The plants in the two photos were only planted days apart, and have had equal sun and water, but the results are starkly different. Granted, there are a few important variables at play.

   Both planters were started by filling them half way to the top with homemade compost. I then placed two seed potatoes on the surface of each and filled the planters up to the top. The one with the lush growth was topped with more of my own compost and mulched with straw. The one with the poor growth was topped with expensive bagged manure compost and mulched with dead leaves. Finally, each planter has a different variety of potato in it, though I forget now which is which.

   Anyone care to opine? Is it just down to different varieties? Could the pricey bagged soil actually suck? What do you think?

   DHL's continued insistence to get me to opt in signature-less delivery surely doesn't have anything to do with the fine print that says that I would "release DHL and my shipper from all liability for any loss or damage following delivery of the shipment according to my request.". Of course, "according to my request" is very relative when the additional information field is limited to 80 characters.

   I didn't chance it.

    Ugh.

    I was asking our HR and indirectly our visa handlers whether I can fly abroad in July/August or if that will complicate my visa renewal process in late August.

    I asked early last month and chased them for a response twice. I haven't heard from them for two weeks, and the latest was that they will be checking and they apologized for taking time.

    Now I found out that they went to my manager's manager and asked for approval for an extra administrative fee for early application because I "will be flying abroad" during the period I need to be in HK.

    Instead of telling me two weeks ago "it's possible, but will require an admistrative fee", in which case I would have said ok, then I won't fly.

    Now instead I've got my manager's manager asking my manager why I'm so irresponsible and leaving the city in the middle of my visa process, when I was literally waiting with my decision and first making sure it would not be a complication.

    My manager will sort this out. I forwarded him my original request "[is it possible to fly during that time or would that complicate things]", which HR or whoever turned into "will fly during that time" somewhere along the way.

      It sounds like the overall analysis is that the representation of most countries moved a bit left, but because Germany and France are so dominant and moved so hard right, the total is still a move a bit to the right.

    I dread moving, even though I've done it over 20 times in the last 25 years and I should be good at it by now.

    Packing up and cleaning the old home is a task that kind of asymptotically goes toward the finished state. Every piece of effort you resolve reveals more effort behind it.

    I try to solve this by amortizing the move over time so that full anxiety doesn't have to hit and I don't have to push myself to do the impossible and finish everything in one day. But because of that asymptote I still end up pulling an all-nighter to meet the deadline.

      At some point in my life I will be old and wise enough that I clean a place up this nice when it's for me, not just when it's for landlords and successor tenants.

      Woohoo all done, keys returned, another tiny era is behind me.

      I just finished today's last meeting and was feeling weirdly hungry ... then I realized of course I'm hungry, I used the lunch break to finish the cleaning!

      With all of work at home and interactive work at work done, I will get some bread and cookies in my belly, and then I will enjoy a well-earned beer and catch up on a week of emails that have been stacking up for unrelated reasons, just a lot to do at once at work as well these two weeks.

      I was expecting it to be in mid-July, as it was last year, but early August is so much better for us, as kid will be fully between semesters and we can make it a month-long trip to Sweden and I pop off for the US west coast for a bit in the middle. 😄

    Potatoes are showing a respectable 10 days worth of growth since the first shoot broke the surface. The tomato cuttings I planted 2 weeks ago were still looking robust, but the leaves started pointing up so I took it as a sign of stress and transplanted them to proper sized pots. Mom is already setting fruit, so hopefully these little fellas will give me some later-season harvest.

      @Hypolite Petovan Especially hot and humid places like Hong Kong. For a Swede it's supernatural how fast everything rots and rusts in this climate.

      I've seen things here I've never seen where I grew up.

      My parents are of that generation that believes you have to clean all the time to have a sanitary home. Here it's actually true. Dust works differently in this air.
