   I don't see the proposal mentioned at https://mastodon.social/@axios/112187928102716826 having any impact on bank runs. Bank runs happen because people begin to believe their funds are at risk. In any system other than "pay us a set fee for holding your money", banks will depend on lending (making loans, buying bonds, wiring funds overnight to help weaker institutions look stronger on official forms) ... and as long as that is the case, a bank run is possible.
   
   Under fee-based funds-holding, banks could have 100% of deposits in a quickly-available form and defuse the rumors that "Bank X is in trouble and you might lose money if you don't withdraw immediately".
   
   Having said all that, I'm not advocating that we replace lending-based banking with fees-based banking. For one thing, someone would still need to provide lending-based funding to Americans ... from credit cards to car loans to home loans. !econusa

   Sunday starts "Elephant Week" for Grandson_4. We'll have a short conversation about elephants, and then Monday through Friday, we'll try to view videos and read read applicable books.
   
   We do these themed weeks for GS4, but Grandson_3 also enjoys them.
   
   MON: introduction ... basic facts about elephants, emphasis on seeing live action video taken in their natural settings as well as zoos. Different kinds of elephants. Possibly including extinct kinds of elephant. Size & weight.
   TUE: Where do elephants live? Location / temperature & climate / environment (what else lives there)
   WED: Elephants' social lives + group structures / elephant reproduction / life cycles
   THU: What do elephants eat? What do they drink? And (important for little boys) do elephants poop?
   FRI: What eats elephants? This is also the time for silliness such as do elephants understand Spanish? and also an elephant related art project if we didn't get to it earlier in the week.

    I used to work down the street from this place. They have several practice poles that the students learn to climb. As I understand it, the pole broke and landed atop the student, so it wasn't just the fall that killed him.

    Walrus week wasn’t as engaging for Grandson_4 as previous animals’ weeks were. But Grandson_3 is enjoying them and starting to pick up things from the videos.
    
    We watched a couple of hungry polar bears 🐻❄️ attempt to have walrus for dinner. Both were unsuccessful. We also saw a number of bears attacking at once, and they were able to isolate some walrus pups and elderly or sickly walruses. The whole group feasted.
    
    The narrator said that this was unusual, as polar bears are not just antisocial, they actively dislike one another.

      Ten years ago I subcontracted there and we were within walking distance, so we could have lunches together, that was nice.

      Just after that there was another 10% layoff and I said you're safe, right, you've been there 30 years, and she said nobody is safe, some people who were there longer had to go.

      The severance is pretty good though, if you're 60 you can get 70% of your salary until you're 65 and retirement kicks in.

      Age difference between sis and me is the same as the age difference between her eldest and uncle Claes. 😊

      So my siblings are solid X-ers and I'm a xennial.

    I learned in one of those threads that the US doesn't actually have the long weekend. Twelve states get Friday off and California gets Monday for un-Easter-related reasons, nobody gets both.

      #hongkong is doing great on the holidays front, we get Christian holidays and traditional Chinese holidays *and* Buddhist holidays.

      So we have Easter this weekend, Ching Ming next Thursday and Buddha's Birthday the month after.

      Also we have Labor Day on the original May First as declared by the Second International, not for Chinese reasons, but for British reasons. The Mainland gets the whole week off.

    We went to bed early and got up super early, so we could watch the premiere of #MurderDrones episode 7.

    There were no English subtitles, and lots of people speak with glitched voices, so the dialog was pretty hard to follow.

    So we watched the episode without subtitles, and then we watched it with German subtitles and I filled kid in on some of the missing bits. The translation is pretty liberal though, so still couldn't be sure exactly what the English said.

    Halfway through, we discovered that English subtitles had been added, so we started over again with English subtitles. 🤣

      It was a stroke of luck that the English was missing and the German ended up the default fallback, because the German subtitles are by far the coolest and we never would have discovered that otherwise.

      Other subtitles (we checked several) are plain text, but the German ones actually glitch when the speech glitches. Tibetan overlays will flicker in and out (you know, like in the eldritch "he comes" in that classic StackOverflow answer about parsing XML with regexes). Terrible for usability, but cool for effect.

      Also the German subtitles are super detailed, translating things on-screen and even making jokes (in English‽) about things happening on-screen.

      We checked German, French, Chinese, Korean, Russian and Japanese audio too, in one key scene, just for fun (I only understand the German well enough). Voice acting is top notch, but the effects don't measure up to the English.

      It's mind-bogglingly impressive how much effort an indie project like this is able to put into internationalization!

    2nd son and his wife are stepping in to pay my cellphone bill and get my phone migrated to a less expensive carrier. One of my brothers recently took over payments on my mom's phone, but did so late in the billing cycle ... leaving me with more bill than funds.
