Is it just me or has the right-wing conspiracy fringe in the US kind of toned it down this election? I mean, they're still churning out bigoted nonsense, but people eating dogs and cats seems much more plausible than world leaders having secret baby-killing orgies in the basement of a pizzeria. Maybe that's just me.
While I also occasionally suffer from the regular FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), I mainly suffer from KIMO (Know I’m Missing Out) about the following behaviors: - Belonging to a cult, whether it’s religious, sports or political. - Believing individual words have any inherent power. - Enjoying recreational drugs, including alcohol, smoking and coffee.
And I feel it makes it harder for me to find a meaning for my life given I’m not experiencing the full range of behaviors it offers. 🤔
How do I know that a Meta engineer is working from home in my apartment building? Probably the unclaimed-for-days bubble mailer in the shared package room addressed to "[redacted] Meta Platforms, Inc" that has sticker labels on it saying it includes a Yubico pass key and an "Open Me First" document.
My company's latest internal training about business ethics contains this uncut gem:
Keep in mind...
... if you’ve indicated where you work on your personal social media, people online might reach out to your employer to complain about your online actions.
Compared to the rest of the training, the more informal tone of this tidbit with the ellipses makes me think it was a last minute addition after Things Had Happened.
I finally pulled the trigger and bought a second-hand copy of the #LEGO 71411 The Mighty Bowser set lego.com/en-us/product/the-mig…. And at almost 3,000 parts, it’s a hefty chonker. On the plus side, his eyes and eyebrows are posable, for delightfully silly effects. On the minus side, without the by-bag sorting of a new set, the paper instructions have a terrible color palette and I made several color errors during the build, which made me think I was missing more parts than I actually did.
In the end, the set looks pretty close from the original #Nintendo subject and my main issue will be to find a spot in my apartment for this large and rather heavy model.
Quoted anonymously because I do not want to hurt their feelings, to the question whether we’re the only intelligent life form in the Universe:
[…]the arrogance required to assume we're unique in the vastness of the universe seems deeply human to me.
I’d argue that mainly basing oneself on a perceived humanity trait to answer a question that has been asked so many times that we probably have a pretty good statistical model for it seems equally human to me.
Not saying they’re wrong, but the arrogant ones might not be wrong either just because they’re arrogant.
I'm going to see #Heilung in #Dublin this April, but I'm probably going to stick around in #Ireland for a while too see the sights. If anyone has any suggestions, they'd be appreciated.
Hey @[Brad Koehn ☑️](http://social.gibberfish.org/people/349ab82134669a3b), you seem to know a lot about aviation. I have a question for you. Yesterday when I was on a flight, the plane was within seconds of touching down when we climbed again, circled, and came in for a second landing attempt. The pilot eventually told us that there was another plane on the runway, which was -- concerning. Do you know if these kind of things are filed publicly with some federal agency? I'd like to know the details of what actually happened.
To publicly acknowledge the fact that an artificial intelligence was used during the writing of a scientific paper, scientists add "et AI" (with AI in Latin) at the end of the list of authors.
@anubis2814 That can be an aspect of it, but then it becomes easy to switch from accusing people of hypocrisy to accusing people of cognitive dissonance and we've learned nothing. Some people just don't have the same core values as ourselves, and so judging their opinions based on our values will always yield a flawed analysis.
@Brian Ó Sure, there can be willful or intentional hypocrisy, but I feel like it can be more accurately described by “lies”, “political calculus”, etc… As the person doing it is still internally consistent throughout the process.
Does anyone here use #AWX? I just had AAP pitched at me by some Red Hat sales people and they made it sound like RH has deliberately hamstrung the project to force people behind their paywall.
