@wire perhaps I'm getting confused between #Signal, #Telegram, and #Wire. From what I remember, Moxie liberated the Signal client source before setting up #OWS, but resisted releasing the server source for some time, claiming there was no point. Just as he still claims there's no point replacing Google Play Services in mainstream Signal, or distributing the Android client in #FDroid, or supporting #federation between servers. Some people discussing this in 2016: https://whispersystems.riseup.narkive.com/LvP523Tg/signal-server-source-code @alexl
... and in #GoodNews, #Wire not only confirms they're working on secure, federated chat, but #federation will be part of the #MLS protocol being standardized at the #IETF : "During this interim the proposal was made to include federation more strongly in the design considerations and the proposal was adopted as a future goal for MLS. Wire's goal has always been to achieve federation between different compatible backends and this brings us one step closer to that goal!" https://wire.com/en/blog/mls-meeting-summary/
Investment capital tries to make digital platforms achieve "scale" as a #biomimicry of cancer, making small things grow forever at exponential rates. If we're going to mimic anything in the natural world, it ought to be the fungal mycelium that connects to the roots of all the plants in a forest, and exchanges resources between them. A mutually beneficial network, loosely joining many small things, which becomes more than the sum of its parts. In other words, #federation.
@alexl see the 2-3 length discussions I've had here over the year about chat apps. TL;DR Wire is #copyleft#FreeCode on both client and server side, and has plans to support #federation between Wire servers. #Electron is a downside, but they are ok with community-created clients without Electron to connect to their server (unlike #Signal, don't know about #Telegram)
(english) I try to create an overview of the features of the different federated platforms and which communication protocols they are capable of. Or add another platform (with sources) that can "speak" the communication protocol that is mentioned on the sheet. Once it's finished it will be available for everybody. github.com/hoergen/besser-der-…

The precise criteria are somewhat murky, but it seems to involve hurting a Nazi's feelings. Various lame attempts have been made at creating a static list, but thanks to @[https://podupti.me](/people/5ec992ef88b6e211) we have proper software to do this.
If you're a #cuckpodmin, or just wish you were, add your pod to the list so all of the edgelord shitheels in the Federation know to steer clear of your NPC ass. If you sign up in the next 30 days, George Soros will cover all of your hosting expenses for a year*!
(* I mean, unless he already does -- which is pretty much a given, amirite?)
*stage whisper* I WONDER IF ANYONE EVER CAME UP WITH IDEAS FOR ONBOARDING USERS SOMEWHERE OTHER THAN MASTODON.SOCIAL AND THEN WAS COMPLETELY IGNORED IN GITHUB ʲᵘˢᵗ ˡⁱᵏᵉ ʷⁱᵗʰ ᵉᵛᵉʳʸ ᵒᵗʰᵉʳ ᵃᵗᵗᵉᵐᵖᵗᵉᵈ ᶜᵒⁿᵗʳⁱᵇᵘᵗⁱᵒⁿ :facing_think:
♲ @dredmorbius@mastodon.cloud: Federated Networks Association
Federated Networks Association Ry is a non-profit volunteer organization that aims to spread knowledge about federated web projects and help people and projects involved in this area.
♲ @zauberstuhl@diaspodon.fr: Currently the federated web holds 35 projects with 9 different protocols (source: the-federation.info) all trying to connect and communicate with each other. But does that actually work?
Does somebody have some good reading material on distributed/federation systems written for developers? I'm currently in the planning phase of making an FOSS alternative to Thingiverse using federated servers, but no clue where to start. #3dprinting#developers#federation
bottom line: Don't trust the shiny advertising brochure which tells you about end-to-end encryption, security and privacy if you only get a black box at the end. Only #FreeSoftware, #OpenStandards, #federation and the ability to self host will be able to secure your privacy.
Hey Mastodonians, #GNUSocial citizens and others! Gear up for tens of millions of Nextcloud users spread over several 100K servers who can now join the #fediverse in just one click!
