@zardoz good point. I've started using #Jabber again recently, as well as #Matrix, and I find I can't help using them like the fediverse, a web forum, or a mailing list, rather than a realtime channel. I think the solution is tools that integrate delayed and realtime interactions. So the default is, say, a fediverse app, but there is a way to see when someone else is online, and launch a realtime chat with them.
@rek2 you left out #Jami, which has a much more consistent #UX across platforms than #Tox (eg none of the Tox mobile apps I've tried support group chat). You also left out #BigBlueButton, which I keep hearing is much less of a resource hog on the server-side than #JitsiMeet, and I can confirm JM is a massive resource hog on the client-side. I haven't used #Discord but I've heard #Riot (#Matrix client) is a pretty good substitute?
@ssokolow it's a long and frustrating process and its not inevitable, but it's happening because thousands of people are putting in the work to make it happen. * There's never been more interest in #federated and #P2P replacements for the #datafarms than there has been over the last year, nor more libre community-hosting services springing up. * there is a #libPurple plugin for #Matrix: https://github.com/matrix-org/purple-matrix#readme * Breaking the chip monopoly breaks the remains of the x86/Windows monopoly
@wyatwerp like the author said, FOAF was a product of a time when it was normal for most web users to have personal and professional homepages. I can't see how it would be helpful for chat, maybe for finding the chat address of a user by entering their email address or homepage? But you'd still need a chat app using a realtime protocol like #IRC, #XMPP, #Wave, #Matrix, or #WebRTC. (1/2) @alcinnz

The fact that RiotWeb for @matrix gives you markdown in the chat makes a lot of pastebin gymnastics totally obsolete. I can post my code snippets right there in the development chat of my project and things are just formatted nicely β€οΈ #Matrix
#Matrix plans: (1) migratable accounts (2) move from client-server to mostly peer-to-peer, so homeserver membership optional (3) turn off matrix.org (which currently hosts 35% of Matrix users) homeserver
