After months of negative publicity, Ring is finally taking a few small steps towards not being completely awful. The company clearly would rather be a government contractor than a supplier of consumer products, but has repeatedly gotten in its own way...

    1. 'Anonymized' Data Is Meaningless Bullshit
      from Gizmodo
When most of us think of how the concept of “data” has been skewered by the press, we’re probably thinking about an app’s location data tipping off our home address, or apps like Grindr tipping advertisers off about our sexuality. What’s less scrutinized, both by the public and by those in public office, is data that’s “anonymized”—tied to something like an IP address, rather than a name—even though that’s a concept we’ve seen to be bullshit time and again.

My phone is finally getting laid to rest, and I have a new one arriving this afternoon. I already plan to use F-Droid as much as possible, and Aurora Store for stuff I have to install for work that isn't FOSS. Aside from that, does anyone have any tips on things to do to secure/privatize it as much as possible? I'm assuming I won't be able to root it.

Looking back on 2019, one thing I'm happy to see is that #privacy concerns are becoming much more mainstream.

When I gave a talk at LP2017 just three years ago, I began by saying "this is not a tinfoil hat presentation". If I were to give that talk today, I could confidently omit that line, because 2019 has created a far more fucked up narrative than I ever could have.

(On the downside, I haven't been able to keep up with the deluge of privacy related issues over the past year.)

Many tech companies tout #privacy and security features that coincidentally also increase their own control and your dependence on them.

In this case, the feature protects user location data from competitors but not from Apple:

This opt-in clause is the critical reform we need. As in California, tech companies will lobby to remove it.

Better to have no #privacy than merely an illusion of it because that illusion causes people to do self-harming and self-incriminating things, even in nations where it's a 'crime' to allege God does not exist
