    There was recently a lot of news about DNS over HTTPS. Some people say it's bad for privacy because it centralizes the DNS requests on Google, Cloudflare and Quad9.

    Time to change that and run your own DNS over HTTPS server. I spend some time today in writing, documenting and arranging a small container setup to allow you to do this:

    https://octo.sh/container-library/dns-over-https/blob/master/README.md

    I feel like not enough people focus on the fact that Germany wants to outlaw hosting Tor servers. A significant amount of Tor is hosted from Germany, but more importantly, if Germany outlaws it, many other countries that so far were afraid to do so will follow suite. All intelligence agencies despise Tor and lobby their governments to shut it down. It's a slippery slope.

    #Introduction

    As a FOSS enthusiast I think I've found the right Mastodon instance for me.

    So, what can I tell you about me. Quick 'n' dirty:
    * learning #Python
    * help people to protect their #privacy with various projects
    * use #Debian and #SailfshOS on my main machines

    Goals:
    * spread & gain knowledge
    * meet new people
    * build a small forum
    * create a magazine (for fun)

    That's it for now. I'm looking forward to have interesting conversations.

    Wer sich über die teils verpixelten Gesichter auf meinen Photos von der Demo wundert, ich hab mal #ObscuraCam vom Guardian Project ausprobiert.

    Schon nicht schlecht, aber bei so Massen werden zu wenige automatisch erkannt.

    Wer Guardian Project nicht kennt, die haben eine Handvoll #Android #privacy apps in einem F-Droid Repository. Z.B. auch #Orbot Tor für Android und ehemals #Orfox für Orbot, jetzt Tor Browser.

    Since I'm on hotel Wifi, a reminder to travelers: consider using a VPN or Tor. I use the latter, both for my web browsing and for SSH to my home server, for privacy reasons.

    It's not just about data collection on guests by the hotel or network operator---some networks, like my hotel, aren't even encrypted, so any non-encrypted traffic can be sniffed. There's a lot of metadata that can be sniffed even from encrypted connections, including domains that you're accessing, and traffic analysis can get a pretty good idea of what it is you're looking at depending on the sites you're visiting. So any guest or anyone else within range (or any users of long-range antennas, even) could sniff data from guest connections.

    Be safe!

    Software is trending in the wrong direction. Decreased transparency, centralisation, and proprietary monopolies.

    In this article I describe the 5 ingredients to ethical software:

    - open data
    - open source
    - distributed deployment
    - decentralised hosting
    - end to end encryption

    https://thinkmoult.com/five-fundamental-facets-of-ethical-software.html

    Let's make software less about profit, and more about people again.

    #Privacy? I don't have anything to hide.

    > Over the last 16 months, as I've debated this issue around the world, every single time somebody has said to me, "I don't really worry about invasions of privacy because I don't have anything to hide." I always say the same thing to them. I get out a pen, I write down my email address. I say, "Here's my email address. What I want you to do when you get home is email me the passwords to all of your email accounts, not just the nice, respectable work one in your name, but all of them, because I want to be able to just troll through what it is you're doing online, read what I want to read and publish whatever I find interesting. After all, if you're not a bad person, if you're doing nothing wrong, you should have nothing to hide." Not a single person has taken me up on that offer.

    @tigase para mi al menos el problema son las apps que usan servicios de Google. Uso @fdroidorg precisamente para evitarlo.No puedes usar una herramienta que respeta tu !privacidad si le informa a Google de todo lo que haces tú y tus contactos.

    For me, the problem are apps that use Google services. One more reason to use FDroid.
    You can't use an app that uses !xmpp to respect your #privacy and tell Google every single thing you do as same for your contacts.

    #Facebook shared a vision about a #privacy. We applaud the idea & goals, with some skepticism.

    Meanwhile, it will still be a single platform owned and controlled by a single player - #decentralization is a better way to keep data under control of users.

    Popular mobile apps send sensitive personal data to Facebook by using Facebook's SDK to collect this data:

    https://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-receives-personal-info-like-your-heart-rate-from-popular-apps/

    – at least 11 out of 70 popular apps are affected

    This should be the expectation: a note of "microphone (disabled in software)" at minimum.

    Also, they're not selling it to you, they're renting it out. Such is the pathology of turning products into services. It's a sick market dynamic.
