TWF a #privacy advocate publishes an article about the perils of #OnlineTracking on a mainstream website with tons of tracking.
In this case, not even a mainstream journalism website; Cory Doctorow's opening paragraphs here: http://locusmag.com/2018/07/cory-doctorow-zucks-empire-of-oily-rags/
That's four different third-party companies that can track my reading of the article: Facebook, Google (thrice), Pinterest, and Wordpress (twice). And this is really tame compared to a newpaper...

All it costs to fulfill the average person's needs for digital services is a $5 per month VPS instance. It's even cheaper if you buy a single board computer and host your services at home.
We've been letting companies steal our personal data and sell it to the highest bidder and destroying democracy in the process all to save what? A coffee a month?
This is one of the worst deals in history.

I need some help with ethical alternatives to #Alexa, #Siri and #GoogleHome.
The main open source voice assistants seem to be #Mycroft and #Snips:
Mycroft AI
https://mycroft.ai/Snips AI
https://snips.ai/Any others?
Does anyone have opinions about how well the #alternatives respect people's #privacy?
Is it correct that Mycroft is centralised (voice queries via a central server) and Snips is decentralised (voice queries locally on the device)?

Help me out, feediverse! Some time ago I ran into a site where you could enter the name for an #android APK and it'd list all the included trackers.
Anyone has the link? My search-fu is weak today.

Escaping Google's gravity well: personal to-do list
I can't find who shared the Google alternatives page of RestorePrivacy.com https://restoreprivacy.com/google-alternatives/ with me but this is the path I intend to take forward.
I already:- deleted my Analytics and AdWords accounts.
- switched to https://www.qwant.com for personal search.
- replaced Chrome with https://vivaldi.com based on Chromium without the Google wrapper.
- set up a personal https://nextcloud.com/ instance.
- Move my documents to NextCloud although the web editing tools are lacking.
- Open an email/calendar account with a different provider (ProtonMail, MailFence?).
- Delete my Google account entirely.

#Amazon treats its warehouse workers badly, pays very little tax and tracks its users. Its #Kindle platform will delete books that people have already bought.
Here are some updated ethical alternatives to #AmazonBooks, Kindle and #GoodReads:

Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions for alternatives, if you have any more suggestions (or feedback on these alternatives) please reply to this post.

Do you use #GoogleForms, #SurveyMonkey or similar services?
Are you happy with your data, and your users' data, being exploited by third parties for commercial purposes such as shadow profiling?
There are #Free #OpenSource alternatives which let you control your data and offer your users privacy, which you can self-host or use online as a service:
