I keep seeing posts about #Twitter turning off microservices deemed bloatware and including the #SMS service that #2FA depends on.

This means that if you turned on two factor authentication, you cannot lo back in if you log out

Media Player Integration into KDE connect SMS App, GSoC 2020
By Aniket kumar from Aniket Kumar

      Hello everyone,

It’s been over two weeks since I posted last time. This is the fourth report for my GSoC project. Previous two to three weeks period, I spent working on integrating media player and image viewer into KDE Connect SMS app as well as changed and improved some of my previous implementations as pointed by my mentors. The project has reached the stage where the SMS app is able to receive and display thumbnails in the chat as well as user can request to view any original attachment file just by clicking on that particular attachment thumbnail and it will get opened inside the SMS app as well as user can open it in another multimedia application present on the desktop. Here’s a demonstration video of it’s working.

Now my next step is to enable SMS app to allow users to send supported multimedia files from desktop to android side from where it will be sent to the destination’s phone number. using klinker sms-mms library. In the next post I plan to show you guys a proper working SMS-MMS app which will not only allow users to send plain text messages but multimedia files as well. 🙂

Is there an app that will let me send and receive SMS texts without a phone plan? I make < 1 phone call a month, so I'm really paying for SMS, but at the price I pay for that it's a rip off. Ideas?

    #sms #textmessaging #cellphone

If people really want to contact me, they can still #phone me, write me an #SMS, #email or a #letter. Many still bother, but I get it's a tough call for simple acquaintances. I still feel it's worth it holding to your principles. #irc #signal #matrix #telegram #discord #whatsapp

I miss the era where #email was a big deal and the primary means of electronic text communication, before the advent of #IRC, #IM apps and #SMS messaging.

That era will never return, mind you.

I talked to my “no answer” kid ( #Daddy_A ) for a few minutes recently because of birthdays. It was good, but uncomfortable. I ended it pretty quickly.

Our last actual phone call before now was Christmas of 2017. (But we do communicate over #Wire regularly and sometimes via #SMS.)

@luke I've got a 29 year old like that. Sometimes, #Daddy_A goes silent for months and I wonder if I offended him. But when he suddenly feels like communicating, I get multiple daily #SMS and #Wire messages from him for 2-3 months.

Agreed, #SMS isn't a silo, although not a freely accessible protocol either; it's only available at the whim of the carrier. And Google's new Chat uses RCS, supposedly Rich Communication Services, which will be equally controlled by carriers. But my suspicion is that, unlike SMS, Google will become the only app vendor for RCS protocol messages. My 5 year comment was based on the expected lifespan of Google projects. Google Mail has been around for a while, Google Buzz and Wave not so much.

Glad we have unlimited #SMS on our plan. As a family, we send about 1,800 text messages per month. Note: this is _after_ #sonOne took over #GS1's phone.
