Brian Ó (blacksam@social.gibberfish.org)'s status on Friday, 05-Jun-2020 15:45:49 EDT Brian Ó Is there an app that will let me send and receive SMS texts without a phone plan? I make < 1 phone call a month, so I'm really paying for SMS, but at the price I pay for that it's a rip off. Ideas?

zorak (zorak@social.ilikefreedom.ro)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Sep-2019 16:42:48 EDT zorak If people really want to contact me, they can still #phone me, write me an #SMS, #email or a #letter. Many still bother, but I get it's a tough call for simple acquaintances. I still feel it's worth it holding to your principles. #irc #signal #matrix #telegram #discord #whatsapp In conversation from social.ilikefreedom.ro permalink -
Mr. Matt :debian: :linux: (matt@linuxrocks.online)'s status on Friday, 05-Jul-2019 14:41:02 EDT Mr. Matt :debian: :linux: I miss the era where #email was a big deal and the primary means of electronic text communication, before the advent of #IRC, #IM apps and #SMS messaging.
That era will never return, mind you.

lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Wednesday, 15-May-2019 21:57:21 EDT lnxw48a1 I talked to my “no answer” kid ( #Daddy_A ) for a few minutes recently because of birthdays. It was good, but uncomfortable. I ended it pretty quickly.
Our last actual phone call before now was Christmas of 2017. (But we do communicate over #Wire regularly and sometimes via #SMS.)In conversation from nu.federati.net permalink -
lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Friday, 12-Oct-2018 19:41:03 EDT lnxw48a1 @luke I've got a 29 year old like that. Sometimes, #Daddy_A goes silent for months and I wonder if I offended him. But when he suddenly feels like communicating, I get multiple daily #SMS and #Wire messages from him for 2-3 months. Bob Jonkman (bobjonkman@gs.jonkman.ca)'s status on Monday, 23-Apr-2018 01:43:14 EDT Bob Jonkman Agreed, #SMS isn't a silo, although not a freely accessible protocol either; it's only available at the whim of the carrier. And Google's new Chat uses RCS, supposedly Rich Communication Services, which will be equally controlled by carriers. But my suspicion is that, unlike SMS, Google will become the only app vendor for RCS protocol messages. My 5 year comment was based on the expected lifespan of Google projects. Google Mail has been around for a while, Google Buzz and Wave not so much. In conversation from web permalink -
lnxw48a1 (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Thursday, 12-Apr-2018 18:57:02 EDT lnxw48a1 Glad we have unlimited #SMS on our plan. As a family, we send about 1,800 text messages per month. Note: this is _after_ #sonOne took over #GS1's phone. In conversation from nu.federati.net permalink
