@Mikoto @mazuba OCAP is used for everything. an admin may choose to configure her server to not require any specific permission to access public data, however. -

OCAP (as used in APnext) is user transparent, so it's not like OAuth in that regard.
but yes, it will be possible for the endpoint knock to include data that narrows the context to a specific user (but it's not necessary because the peer can always refuse to service any request, and that is allowed by current AP by the way) -

so *ultimately* the goal is to give people a wider range of options with how their federation works with other instances. this leads to less restrictions in general, not more. -

an astute observer might note that this means that we can do new things with this architecture, like have instance *greylisting*
which means instead of having a whitelist or a blocklist, we can let an admin decide whether or not to allow the relationship.
it also means that we can move past instance blocks to postures like "these users on this instance are allowed, but these other users aren't yet allowed" -

@Mikoto @mazuba
OCAP means the following in a nutshell
your server tries to do something that isn't allowed for just anyone to do like post to my inbox or fetch a non-public post
my server says no.
your server knocks on an endpoint and says "I'm fedi.absturztau.be, here's some proof, I need to establish a relationship with your server"
then my server either says yes, here is a capability token or no, fuck off
then if you try your operation again with the token, it will either allow it or say no (for example a token could only be valid for X period of time or grant only Y permission)
so basically OAuth is a form of OCAP: establish a relationship once, use it for many requests -

(the analogy to blockchain is poignant though: notarized datashards have several similar properties to blockchain technology)
