@ben there's a working patch in florence repo for transparency. but fediverse.network doesn't parse the data from mastodon yet. -

@succfemboi both glitchsoc and florence are interested in transparency. but some work needs to be done on opt-out before it can land in either. -

it is the intention of the transparency group inside Pleroma to allow admins to use the transparency data to foster better intra-admin working relationships.
with the fediverse.network changes, admins can now discover when instances which participate in transparency have taken adverse actions against their own instance using the collected transparency data.
if you do not want to participate in transparency, you can disable it in your config file, but you will not get any benefits from the transparency data either, since you choose to not participate. you have to contribute your own transparency metrics in order to benefit from the transparency data. -

@jellypotato yes, indeed, but if you opt out of transparency, you don't get to see who blocks you. -

by the way instances which participate in transparency (right now Pleroma instances only) can use fediverse.network to find out what instances are believed to block yours.
we are working on extending transparency to the various Mastodon forks through NodeInfo. if you want to see transparency in Mastodon, get Gargron to add NodeInfo support today, as we're trying to have a mostly standardized reporting format. -

@sina there is a reason for it, actually, but it's not built on technically sound ground. if they all band together and all block gab, then the existence of their instances are less likely to become known to gab. but, of course, the real fix is to fix ActivityPub itself so that instances may have better insight over who is fetching their objects. -

@sina there's plenty of reasons to block gab, though. on juche town we have seen many unpleasant interactions. but that decision should be left to the individual communities to decide what they want. -

@strypey @hellpie
indeed, it is important to note that Pleroma was originally a response to the Diaspora team going off and making a meme generator instead. OStatus was used instead of Diaspora protocol because OStatus was actually somewhat documented. -

@flussence
three points here.
- it's something that is being worked on, but requires some thought on how to fix it.
- not providing this data to instances which choose not to participate in transparency may encourage them to participate in transparency if they care about knowing the reverse.
- Mastodon should just publish the data as we can infer it anyway using the peers endpoint and colliding. the peers endpoint isn't useful for that on Pleroma as it returns all known instances, including ones where messages are dropped from.
