    1. Tor pulls in record donations as it lessens reliance on US government grants
      By Jon Russell from TechCrunch
Tor, the open-source initiative that provides a more secure way to access the internet, is continuing to diversify its funding away from its long-standing reliance on U.S. government grants. The Tor Project — the organization behind the service which stands for “The Onion Router” …

One of Tor's config options is called "FascistFirewall", which when set only creates outgoing connections through the already open 80 and 443 ports. Perfect way to connect when using the guest wifi in my heavily restricted office.

Also confirms that corporations are fascist, pass it on ;)

Mechanical keyboard with blue switches and open-back headphones. My co-workers must love me.

In my defense I haven't gotten any comments so it must not be that bad!

Nothing like breaking in a new pair of headphones with some of your favorite albums.

Sgt. Pepper, Pet Sounds, Pinkerton, Sheer Heart Attack, Rumors, and Melodrama queued up so far!

I finally got a hold of all my families old camcorder tapes as I've been meaning to ask for them for years to digitally transfer them before they degrade.

At the 2003 Halloween tape, a comment my dad had made to my grandmother definitely hit hard. She hated being filmed, and he was joking with her that in 20 years she'll want to see what happened then and how she looked. She passed away just over 12 years later. Fuck cancer.

Debian is back in the Mastodon/GNU Social fediverse, follow fosstodon.org/@debian
By larjona from The bright side

The GNU Social instance where the @debian account was hosted (quitter.se) shut down last May. Thanks to the Quitter.se admins for all this time!

Long overdue, I’ve setup the @debian account with the feed of micronews.debian.org in other place (I still cannot selfhost properly, due to time constraints mostly). This time I chose a Mastodon instance, fosstodon.org. Thanks to the Fosstodon admins for hosting, and Carl Chenet for feed2toot.

If you are in the GNU Social/Mastodon fediverse (or other network compatible with ActivityPub I guess), you can follow https://fosstodon.org/@debian to get the news (the official source will always be https://micronews.debian.org, though).

I will try to follow back and answer mentions/replies as time allows. Ping (my contact info is in https://wiki.debian.org/LauraArjona) if something goes wrong (I’m learning this new platform) and I’ll do my best to get things back to normal.

      Happy Solstice!

Being able to roll back to a previous kernel is such an underrated feature when the comparisons start between Linux and Windows.

Kernel upgrade on Debian Testing borked my sound, previous kernel works perfectly 😌

I didn't think I'd like it much, but this winter-y "holiday" black tea is really, really good. I'm not usually a fan of extra flavors in my tea, but it's a good morning cup for sure. Perfect to have while looking over what systems I can code for :python:

    #tea

Hopefully with the fediverse making a name for itself, along with other non-corporate projects, the mainstream can start to slowly move away from behemoths and realize the benefits to decentralization and self-hosting. Or at least towards the importance of privacy in the digital age.

It's been a busy past few months, so hello again, Fediverse!

I did finally figure out though the issue I've been having with my home server. After reboots it'd be unable to connect to the network despite finding no issues with the SD card. Finally realized that the lack of logs meant that the boot process never completes. The issue? Lines in fstab for HDDs that weren't connected. Removed them and no more issues!

Browse the web with Tor and keep open a terminal window running "tail -f /var/log/tor/debug.log"

Been trying out the Pulse keycaps that finally arrived this past weekend. I was so used to XDA and DSA profiles that SA is kinda awkward to use. Doesn't help that I didn't opt for the actual ortholinear modifiers (because I wanted symbols to go along with the rams) so the lower row isn't flatter like they should be.

You know you've spent too much time working in pandas when you try to see if a string contains a word by doing

    foo.str.contains('bar') instead of
    'bar' in foo
