Finally gave in and just installed a fresh virtual instance of #voidlinux :void:

I've been meaning to try it out as a potential distro for a new laptop (whenever that happens) while keeping my fav Debian on a hypothetical desktop.

Hoping it will satisfy my itch for a super minimal install, and it'll give me the opportunity to try custom install scripts that would set up my dotfiles and necessary software.

Everytime I feel like I'm ready to continue working on the main functionality of the program, I realize there's more work to be done in writing the code for the date module. This accounting calendar better not be more trouble than it's worth!

Been a lot more motivated this past week to start working on my budgeting program!

I feel like I've learned a lot from my last two projects and from incorporating as much #python as I could with what I do at work, which makes this feel like I actually know what I'm doing and not just bumbling about.

Hopefully I get the base and CLI inteface finished soon so it can be usable before I start the most important part: integration as a bot in XMPP (followed by others hopefully)!

@mike Most everything I've done with it so far has been automation and data analysis with the pandas lib, and the only time where I've seen it be really useful has been when I used a class to initialize the data (in my case mostly pulling in data from a spreadsheet and putting it into dataframes), then using methods to mess with it.

All it really does is make it more convenient. Rather than having to return a dataframe, I can just keep track of it as an attribute and share it amongst functions.

I think I went a little overboard with #python classes when they finally clicked.

I'm looking through some of the scripts I made at work to automate my reports, and all but one could have the class removed in favor of just one or two functions... I think I just wanted to use classes because it made me feel cool or something 😅 or like I knew more than what I was doing.

@kwnd I was already a pipenv user and it works great with that too! Since I started coding in python as a hobby, I've gotten much better at managing the language on my computer. Gone are the days where I'd `sudo pip3 install foo` and watch me break the system python install!

@Maltimore @kyuumo They are but it's something weird with async that the bot API uses. Everything else I've tested with works fine with 3.7, and I'm not about to delve into the async source with my limited knowledge 😅 bug report is open though so hopefully it's fixed soon

Found out through the update from python3.6.8 to 3.7 that the API library for my bot is incompatible with the latter.

Did some searching for a way to locally install multiple versions of #python to use in virtual envs and found this! So if anyone else has faced similar issues, this might be your answer!

    I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action";

it's time for my favourite game, Windows or Capitalism, where we try to guess whether a statement applies to windows or capitalism

    - it's obnoxiously expensive for no reason
    - corporate monopolies allow the big companies to stamp out alternatives and present themselves as the only option, driving up prices to ridiculous levels
    - you are constantly pressured to spend money. in fact, if you don't have money, you can't participate at all
    - advertisements are a fundamental element of the system
    - most people who have souls despise it, but remain complacent because "what are the alternatives? this is the way things are"
    - the mere mention of the names of alternatives disgusts many people
    - the people in charge don't give a shit about you

trick question!! all of these statements apply to windows AND capitalism!!!!!

    • earthling :gentler:

@earthling I use both but prefer XMPP overall as I run my own personal server for me and my wife. If you're self-hosting, prefer a lighter setup, or don't need something like Discord, I'd say XMPP.

Matrix is more of a pain if self-hosted but has more centralized features (especially with the "official" Electron client) compared to XMPP.

    As for client recs:
XMPP - Conversations (Android) and maybe either Gajim or Dino for desktop.
    Matrix - Riot or Nheko

@Gargron The fact is Eugen would crumble if he had to endure the sick, twisted and dehumanizing constant abuse and harassment that Black and Brown folks go through. That gay people go through. That trans people go through. Hell, that women go through everyday.

This is not to say what he goes through doesn't matter, because it does. I do feel he is treated unfairly in some cases.

But the idea that he receives the worst of it is utter bullshit. If anything, he gets off very, very light.

"i use linux as my operating system," i state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. he swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision.
"actually," he says with a grin, "linux is just the kernel. you use GNU+linux."
i don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "i use alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. it's linux, but it's not GNU+linux."

the smile quickly drops from the man's face. his body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth as he drop to the floor with a sickly thud. as he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!"
coolly, i reply "if windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" i interrupt his response with "and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. even if you were correct, you won't be for long."

with a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. he lies on the floor, cold and limp. i've womansplained him to death.
