    @JordiGH Today we have reverted back to the days of timesharing systems and isolated proprietary services that make decentralisation appealing, and we finally have technology to make barriers to participation low:

    * cheap processing and storage
    * affordable persistent broadband
    * commodity virtualisation technology and services

    and since no single service could ever take down the silos (even as broken as they are) highly federated successors seem to be the most likely outcome.

    A note on the passing of Tony Baldwin. Before 2016 the fediverse was a small world of familiar faces, and Tony was one of those. Tony was characteristic of the pioneers of federated social networks in that he was multi-talented. In addition to hacking on miscellaneous social network stuff he was a father, runner, painter, photographer, multilingual translator and anarchist. Like a lot of us he was also a precariat, living on uncertain income in a hostile world and struggling with all of the usual things, and some not so usual ones.

    One thing I should point out which he would probably find funny. I never much liked his Shakespearean insult bot. It was amusing at first, but the joke soon got irritating.

    One of Tony's PHP scripts lives on in an adapted form in the Freedombone project. It's purpose is to clear out old posts so that the database size doesn't grow indefinitely. When you're running on small ARM boards without much storage, and want to keep the performance reasonable, this is quite a good thing to have.

    @deoh Check out the 1980's narrative card game "Dark Cults" by Kenneth Rahman.

    Designed as a 2 player game, one player plays Life, and the other Death, each controlling what happens to the main character.

    There's also a solo variant.

    It's well out of print, but I am working on an unofficial revival:

    I like the Psion form factor, but having used a lot of laptops I think if you're traveling on a train and want to do actual work then a ten inch netbook or 14 inch laptop (like a Thinkpad) is the best kind of size for typing rather than single finger prodding. Larger than that and it starts to get unwieldy.

    I don't agree with everything in this guy's talk, but most of what he says here is ok. It's not enough just to possess good intentions or a code of conduct which scans well. What matters are actions and outcomes. Are you working for the users or against them? Is your workplace genuinely democratic or run like a tinpot dictatorship?

    Fixed the Ghost blogging install on !Freedombone. The docs do list some system requirements and it does say 1Gb RAM as a minimum, so I've added a check for that at the start of the app install.

    @rjt I can't say enough good things about having a little file/media/backup/apps server at home! It's soo useful.

    Tip: set up automatic backups first! It's easy to get into the habit of just dumping everything into the server, so better to not have to worry about it.

    "These clusters look highly vulnerable to worker disruption. A strike in a key warehouse or supplier could close production up and down a supply chain, potentially inflicting huge damage on a business’s reputation for reliability among its partners. This could put enormous pressure on employers to grant concessions or recognise a new union without the need for the sort of secondary or sympathy strike action that is illegal in many countries."
