@natecull im getting really sick of languages like haskell that hide usefull things like file IO and socket based networking under complicated constructs that no one really understands like monads.

Preventing programmers from doing anything besides math isnt going to help anyone. we just need to be more careful about how we are networking, the cloud itself is a mistake, recklessly networking houses and cars is the mistake not allowing programmers to program

@natecull would it be overengineering to implement a full fledged VM that the language runs in? not like java VM but like a container that emulates an x86 machine completely seperate from the host OS, perhaps a permissions system to allow access to net, file, underlying operating system functions. sort of like running lisp as an OS inside of a vm?

@Elizafox why limit personal enrichment? As long as someone isn't destroying/withholding resources then why bother limiting their individualisation? Also are you referring to the principle of occupancy and use when you talk about personal land?

@archangelic I think it's important to have a chunk of experimental knowledge where you aren't in competition with other programmers and you pursue it based on passion and not pressure

@archangelic I feel this so hard. Ive picked up whole other obsessions because I felt so bad about my ability to program.

What helped me was finding a niche that was only relevant to me and did not have job potential. In my case this meant going thru the sicp and then learning common lisp. Maybe you could lean a dead or obscure language?
