@viomi yeah no shit, for every new there needs to be a delete and for every alloc there needs to be a free. I am very familiar with the mechanics of memory leaks. But not only does the kernel expose application memory space via proc but i am pretty sure there are paging attacks that will expose application memory space as well. Like always nothing is safe but if you leak memory it means that the memory is never cleared and is kept in (maliciously) accessible memory for longer then it needs to be

If I have root access I can go into proc and find the process of some sensitive crypto app like gpg or whatnot and just start poking through it's memory. Leaking memory increases the amount of time that data is exposed like that.

you can realloc leaked memory iirc.
Pretty sure the only reason you dont want to leak is that is provides a convenient sidechannel for malicious applications to pick up leftover data.
