This is the IOT strategy, no one cares that your toaster is connected to wifi, they care that you cant fix it yourself and that you have to keep purchasing services from the OEM. Cars are notorious for being something the average joe can fix in their garage, the only reason that actual car manufacturers are putting weight behind this is because every time honda/toyota/ford/whatnot put out an invincible car it robs them of future profits.

Self driving cars are being positioned as a replacement for human controlled cars. thats the fucked up part.
The real problem is that self driving cars wouldnt work any other way. given the economic weight of purchasing a car no sane person would sacrifice a car that they can keep reliable until past the death of the manufacturing company for a product that is subscription based and that they will never be able to afford to own.

The independance of disabled people is extremely important and things such as paddle shifters which open up performance driving to those of us with less use of our legs need to become more common place, you are right to point out that there is a barrier to entry of physical ability.
