@tija @sumika the government backed out after giving fiber to a few neighborhoods around the country, and started only giving fiber to the node boxes in each neighborhood.

therefore the main problem, the old cables running down the streets and into houses, hasn't been fixed

@tija @sumika I think that the problem is that the cables in the ground are so old and were only originally designed for landline usage. when internet came along we just reused the old cables.

it's not uncommon for the internet to drop out or be really slow for a few days after rain where I live (not just me, friends in nearby streets have the same problems)

the NBN was exciting because we were gonna replace all of the cables with (mostly) future-proof ones, and the govt has failed to deliver

@sumika @tija jesus that's pretty shitty. when I switched providers (when I was connecting to the NBN), the technician who came to install it realised our house had shitty wiring and lots of noise at the port we wanted, so he rewired basically the whole house for free. absolute madlad

@sumika @tija I think I did decently in the lottery.

I didn't get fiber to the prem, only to the node, but I can get 50mbit/s in a speed test and speeds I'd consider good for downloading games

how'd you do in the lottery? I know most of my friends get in the 5mbit/s-15mbit/s ballpark.

@tija @sumika I would run my own instance of pleroma on a cheap OVH VPS in sydney but effort and I'd also feel bad for abandoning uwu.social

@tija @sumika all of my shit is in germany so all of my uploads have to go from australia to europe. it's not very fast but all I upload is images occasionally and since I'm an Australian I'm basically used to it

uwu.social uses cloudflare though because it makes using it a little more bearable for me. probably could fix it if you had better routes to your instance. the default routes from me to hetzner aren't good, hetzner doesn't have very good peering for AU providers
