"... the surprise for many was Micronesia, Nauru and the Marshall Islands voting against most resolutions [for a Palestine state] while Vanuatu abstained on them all. These countries are more easily “leaned-on” by the big powers than most others but they are now subject to an Israeli campaign – Pacific Israeli Rim – which is offering development money in return for Pacific countries voting with them at the #UnitedNations." - #JohnMinto https://thedailyblog.co.nz/2019/11/26/the-israeli-push-into-the-pacific/
@denikombucha I agree that reducing all sexual coercion to physical overpowering "perpetuates the stranger danger myth". But learning holistic #MartialArts gives people so much more than just the ability to resist being physically overpowered. There are gains in self confidence, assertiveness, mindfulness, trust in ones intuition, and much more, that benefit people in a myriad of ways. I recovered from the trauma of being assaulted and almost killed by learning #TaiChi from an excellent teacher.
WTF!?! No wonder fully implementing the #ParisAgreement wouldn't keep global warming under 2 degrees (over pre-industrial levels). I wonder if diesel powered international shipping is included?
"Emissions from international air travel are not included in the Paris Agreement, although the United Nations has been working on the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), which may begin to deal with these. Initially, the scheme will be voluntary. Airlines flying routes between countries that join the scheme will have to offset any emissions above 2020 levels from January 2021." #ShaunHendy, Professor of Physics, Auckland University: https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/SC1911/S00068/climate-explained-how-much-does-flying-contribute.htm
That's some heavy duty #eWaste right there. Did those Jump scooters really displace enough car journies in 6 months to achieve less carbon emissions than manufacturing them, transporting them to #Aotearoa, and recycling them?
"People in the tech community know me as a high-tech publicist, a former board member of BMUG — the largest Macintosh computer user group in the world — a founder of the Berkeley Cybersalon, which focused on the impact of technology on every aspect of our lives, and the founder of Gracenet, a networking and support group for women in tech ..."
Q wants you to help them get implemented by crApple, Goggle etc. Never mind the horrendous privacy implications of corporations getting people to voluntarily install #1984 style listening devices in their homes and carrying them around wherever they go. The most important issue here is that the #BootOnAHumanFaceForever has a genderless option. #Facepalm
@ericbuijs FWIW 4GB is actually quite a lot of RAM to require. Lots of folks are using old PCs with less RAM than that, which run other voice/ video apps like Wire, Jami, or Tox apps just fine. I've looked at my system monitor while trying to use Jitsi Meet and it was peaking out my CPUs just trying to do a 2 person voice chat. It's a heavy beast, no doubt about it.
@ericbuijs I'm glad to hear it worked for you folks. As with #Palava.tv, I've tried it many, many times, with only two users, running GNU/Linux or MacOS on my end and the other users running a range of OS on the other. I can only think of one occasion when I had a functional voice chat with it, and that was about 3 years ago. The most recent attempt was a couple of weeks ago and it was unusable for us. That's just for voice chat too, not even trying for video.
@snips is a really great company. They provide private, decentralized, voice assistant tech. Today, they open source tract: A neural network inference engine.
Some interesting times for the government of China. Despite it's extensive attempts at total information control, evidence of their horrific pogrom against Uigher people and their culture in Xingjian province has leaked out, and the people of Hong Kong have voted for democracy and rule of law, over rule of Beijing, in landslide local body election results: https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL1911/S00131/gordon-campbell-on-chinas-bad-week-and-labours-tribalism.htm
@ericbuijs#JitsiMeet is a totally different thing to what I'm describing. As it happens, you are the first person I've ever spoken to who is satisfied with it's UX. It seems to require massive amounts of processing power/ RAM on the users' systems to perform well enough to be anywhere near usable.
@stevenroose hmm. OK. I've been looking for how to do that. Now that you've assured me it exists, I found the 'create private group chat' thing. But this isn't really what I mean. With apps like Wire (or WeChat), I can start in a 1-1 chat, invite a third user, and it automatically creates an ephemeral group chat, without the users having to know or care about naming. It would make sense to delete them as soon as the last person leaves. Perhaps this is an area where #MIX will be better than MUC?
Up to 70% of the white sand on the beaches in the Caribbean and Hawaii is created by parrotfish pooping out algae they eat from coral reefs. One adult parrotfish can produce up to 450 kg of white sand in a year. (Image: Rickard Zerpe.) https://t.co/6zqmcUIotk
