@muzkore my Feb writing retreat was so successful I feel somewhat ambivalent about getting back on the net, especially social media :/ I got all the drafts and notes I had written on paper typed up. Still need to work on an overview and sample chapter. The advice I've got from people who've had books published is that I need those to show to publishing agents.
@VikingKong they are two competing theories (what else could they be?). As a person absorbs more of the arguments and evidence for both, it becomes pretty clear which one is true . That's why Christian kids who get a proper public education always end up accepting that the Earth is round, regardless of what they get fed at home or at church. My point is the best antidode to ignorance is knowledge, not censorship.
One of the topics YT plan to marginalize videos about is 9/11. The events of that day have been used to justify massive increase in state powers (especially #MassSurveillance), and erosion of basic human rights, not just in the USA but across the world. Will videos critiquing that get caught up in the dragnet that's trying to suppress speculative theories about the events themselves?
One way to stop people being systematically misinformed by #FlatEarth videos on YT is making sure that the search results and recommendations associated with those videos include a bunch of videos explaining the science of how we know the earth is round, and debunking flat earth talking points. Marginalization != education. https://mashable.com/article/youtube-to-stop-recommending-conspiracy-theories/
@RandomDamage for sure. I was thinking about the conversations I might end up having as a result of posting that blog piece, and one of the main points I had in mind was that increased state powers are given to the worst possible future government (state or corporate), as well as current ones they might see as benign or helpful.
It's deeply disturbing to see well-meaning activists actively campaigning for increased state-corporate censorship of the net. This is why we need our high schools to start teaching #civics to all students. So that every citizen leaves school understanding what a functioning democracy requires, and knowing the political history that shows us why that is.
From the #SledgeHammer style "trust me, I know what I'm doing", to the conviction that pandering to increasingly delusional Republicans is the way to achieve the political change that USAmericans - and the world they dominate - desperately need; short-termism and careerism. #GreenNewDeal
My Jan/ Feb writing retreat is over. The main goal I set for myself was to type up all the drafts and notes I wrote on paper for my planned Email Ate My Life book. I hit that target about a week before the available time ended. I've still got a few days to try to meet my end-of-February goal, of having an overview and sample chapter completed. More on that here: https://www.coactivate.org/projects/disintermedia/email-ate-my-life
I've referenced Garrett Hardin's infamous paper 'The Tragedy of the Commons' for years, even in conference papers, without ever having read it in full. Today I did that. Hardin uses the term "commons" in a totally different way from #ElinorOstrom. The argument he actually made in 1968 was in favour of the creation of new "commons", in the Ostrom sense of the term. I'll never think of "the tragedy of the commons" the same way again. http://science.sciencemag.org/content/162/3859/1243.full
My Jan/ Feb writing retreat is over. The goal I set for myself was to type up all the drafts and notes I wrote on paper for my planned Email Ate My Life book. I hit that target about a week before the available time ended. Now the really hard bit starts, hacking this mess of ideas and half-written fragments into a coherent first draft. Wish me luck!
I will be offline until the end of February, 2019. Until then, there will be no new blog posts, and I will not be answering any email, or interacting on any other platforms like the fediverse or Loomio. Basically, the plan is to unplug the router, and not plug in back in until I’m ready to go back online. The most important reason for this is just to give myself a break from the net, and spend some time doing other things like going for walks and reading books. @noorul I could be wrong, but I believe people are asked not to use media-heavy sites (including YT) via Tor as it creates high bandwidth costs for people running exit nodes?
@LeftCoast these people are all speculating. Here it is from the horses mouth: "In the longer term, most Razor-qt components will fully be integrated into the LXDE-Qt and both teams will focus on the same project. Looking further ahead, the GTK version of LXDE will be dropped and all efforts will be focused on the Qt port. " https://blog.lxde.org/2013/07/22/the-future-of-razor-and-lxde-qt/
