My state has a law coming into effect July 1 that prohibits throwing food in the garbage. You either have to take it to a composting facility, or compost it at home (in which case you're allowed to throw out meats and dairy). We have a 55 gallon tumbler and a worm bin, but there's nowhere near enough capacity for the amount we produce. I grabbed a stack of free pallets from the hardware store and slapped this together today, out by the garbage bins. I'll have to put together another one to stage the compost in, but this will get us started.

I've had two buckets of maitake spawn colonizing for the past month. The plan was to buy them in the soil at the base of an oak tree, but I ran into a few logistical problems. First, the roots were too close to the surface for me to dig a hole, and second, the blocks would not come out of the buckets. I ended up pounding and shaking them until they finally came out in large chunks, which I made into a pile and then buried under woodchips, which was kind of Plan B anyway. Fingers crossed. 🤞

I've pretty much given up thinking I can understand or predict the political inclinations of "average" Americans. They mystify me, and I don't really feel connected to most of them. I do still think I'm pretty good at sensing when someone's a piece of shit, so I'll just stick with that.

I've been wondering -- as a mere quadrigenarian I haven't lived through a period of widespread social unrest such as this -- is what we're seeing now anything like the 60s? Does anyone who lived through that care to comment?

Is there an app that will let me send and receive SMS texts without a phone plan? I make < 1 phone call a month, so I'm really paying for SMS, but at the price I pay for that it's a rip off. Ideas?
