A pretty violent storm took out a lot of trees last night, so I kept my eyes open this morning for any fresh logs I could snag for growing shiitakes. Mission accomplished!
My shiitake blocks started getting moldy. I guess they were too old after all. No worries, though. I'm starting over with fresh ones and a head full of mistakes to learn from. In the meantime, I won't let them go completely to waste. I chopped the blocks up into 1" cubes which I'm soaking in a bucket of water. Later this afternoon I plan to dump them on an old firewood pile in the woods next to my house. Best case scenario: The mycelia find purchase and in a year or two there will be shiitakes sprouting out all over it. Worst case: They rot into soil. Seems like a decent outcome either way.
One other plan, to hedge my bets against being incapable of growing shiitake indoors: I just sterilized these dowel pegs, which I'm going to inoculate and use to impregnate some logs outside. There are also some dead trees on my property that I'll try pounding a few of these into, just to see what happens.
Still no luck so far getting the old shiitake blocks to fruit, but I just got my fruiting tent put together. I hooked up the DIY fogger with a digital humidistat, so hopefully this will get better results with a regular flow of mist and fresh air.
Today I prepped the next round of mushroom crop. I inoculated two half-pint jars of sterilized bird seed with lion's mane mycelia and one pint jar with shiitake. Once fully colonized, these will in turn be used to inoculate 5 pound hardwood sawdust blocks from which the actual mushrooms will grow. Next up: waiting!
I made a DIY humidifier for the mushroom fruiting tent I'm building. There's an ultrasonic fogger floating in the bucket. The fan pushes air in, and mist comes out of the bulkhead, ready to be piped to wherever I choose. It's simple, cheap, and effective.
PBS Space Time seems to have gotten back to doing videos you don't need a physics degree to follow, like it was 2+ years ago. This is a trend I support.
