It does come down to preference. i have mine set to include link back to the url of the post because...well...#indieweb...doesn't seem to mess the character count on Twitter or Mastodon.
I want people to know I tweet and toot from my own domain and they can as well.

The answer is yes @microdotblog is the simplest #IndieWeb setup. You pay $5 a month and off to the races...Then if you want to move onto your own url there will be plenty of people to help with the half you don't know (yet).

Yes, I have come to believe that a decentralized approach to the web is better than a federated one. I quit scholar.social because I was a “cross-poster” and they force anyone publishing from their own domain to be “unlisted.” My application to social.coop was never approved.
Instead be your own fed.
A good ole blog roll that we share among friends and a chat group is all I need.
