On MIT's campus, one can find a large array of messages of the form "You're a beautiful human being." or "Have a lovely day. You deserve it.". This is jarringly contrasting to the rate at which people here express beliefs that appear to imply the vast majority of people are assholes outside of their political Overton window that don't deserve respect.
There has emerged this narrative that Mark Zuckerberg started out as a hero nerd and lived long enough to become the villain.
This is a narrative of an unawareness of history. Mark Zuckerberg was a crook from the beginning. He got where he got not by being a nerd, but by stealing from the work of actual nerds. Zuckerberg was never a good guy; it just so happens that eventually he treaded on ground the general public actually cares about. (Or maybe not. He's still going quite strong.)
I have a lot of experience disliking things many people vocally love, which makes for a special sweetness when I like something that's getting pourings of hate.
The Washington Post published a false headline that Michael was the first Category 5 since 1992 earlier today. They have since corrected the headline to include "to make landfall", which is still false, but with fewer counterexamples.
In particular, though, what would be correct is "to make landfall in the US", but even if that was intention, the headline as such implies a false insignificance of category 5 landfalls in other countries like Mexico.
Happy birthday to Thomas Jefferson, Madalyn O'Hair, Christopher Hitchens, and Garry Kasparov, four truly great thinkers who have highlighted ridiculousnesses in the status quo.
