This is probably gonna be the first New Year's that will feel meaningful in any sense to me after such a tumultous year.

@wim_v12e @Eidon Ah. Yes, it very much is. And it should be even clearer now that I have clarified some background (I've been reading stuff about Nishida for a while now and it still hasn't quite clicked tho hoping to move on to primary source).

@wim_v12e @Eidon What he's really doing is giving an account of the identity of entities based on their being a product of some essential contradiction such that they exist "in-between" universality and particularity, or more accurately on the being the entity possesses having a relative location in what he calls "absolute nothingness." Or something like that. The only thing he shares with Spinoza is the idea of unity--but for Nishida this unity is experiential.

@wim_v12e @Eidon It's not exactly that literal, but if you're just extending the metaphor one could say "Yes." But this physical metaphor can be misleading. When Nishida is engaging in ontology, he is largely scrapping the Western approach of accounting for determinate entities through a substance theory (i.e., a theory of some entity that is self-sufficient and independent in its essence and nonetheless accounts for variations in the properties of things).

@Eidon Well there are a few anthologies of Japanese philosophers. The one that covers him more extensively as one of its chapters is Philosophers of Nothingness by James Heisig. Otherwise you will have to hunt through primary source for where he uses his metaphor. Unfortunately I have minimal primary source reading so idk which you should start with, especially since Nishida develops his thought more over time.

@Eidon Very good! That's actually quite close to what Nishida means, except he applies it to his ontology as a whole, in the context of universal v. particular iirc.

@Eidon Sounds a lot like something Nishida would say, but he would add something about centrifugal and centripetal motion from the center.

@kai Tell me how it goes when you do. I feel like I could drastically personalize my diet if I bother my doctor about it enough and have them turn into into a sports doctor. 🤔

@Bitshift I mean, I've been autodidactic for most of my life so stuff like this might also be enough to damage my opinion of uni I feel. /:

@Bitshift Does this mean college is permanently out of my reach now? No. It's just I can imagine likely ending up wasting more time. Enough time for me to question whether its worth it at some point.

@Bitshift Sort of? They said generally I can submit at a later time. Wouldn't know exactly when yet. Also what if I have to pay back loans while having to pay my initial tuition payments (esp. since those paymetns roll in advance of the semester you apply for)? Idk.

@Bitshift The loan servicer also said I can resubmit at a later time given I'm in the process of registering for Fall. The problem is the payments will start rolling before I meet the conditions so I can resubmit and successfully get deferred so it's still kind of fucked.

@Bitshift I went on leave due to financial aid issues to begin with, too, so this is ironic. Anyway, I sent the closest application to my situation to the loan servicer even though none of them quite fit my situation. Sent documents confirming pre-registration for Fall and confirming that while not considered enroll I'm still technically associated with the college--just under a different status.
