@Ricardus I believe that was his thing, yes. What bugged me was the amount of energy he put into it. I don't remember him addressing any other issue. The practice is less widespread here in Europe than it is in the US. There was just something about the guy. Why would he dedicate himself to that? In a party that mainly concerns itself with the digital age, privacy, copyright, etc. Yes, we were thing to widen our perspective a bit at the time, but...

When I was active in the Norwegian Pirate Party, there was this guy who wouldn't stop talking about circumcision. He'd hold talks on it for us and seemed a bit too interested in it. It didn't help that he was kind of a creep. Granted, the guy was from a religious part of Norway and religious people do seem a bit obsessed with people's naughty bits in general, but still...

If you ever attempt to do something a bit different and it's open to the public, expect all the weirdos to be attracted to it, like moths to a flame, especially if you're trying to start a new political party. There's always some person out there who feels that we ought to talk more about the rights of earwax fetishists, and about teaching children about earwaxphilia as part of the sex ed curriculum, not to mention the elite conspiracy against earwax as evidenced by all the Q-tips.

@DaveHiggins Well, if the plot is about treating cancer by purifying radium at home, then it would make sense to use such old fashioned processes. If the plot is, as I thought it was, about making and selling drugs to pay for medical treatment, then it's a bit more contrived.

The singlemost frequent mistake made in image processing is to skip gamma conversion before and after performing arithmetic on colour values. 3D rendering pipelines mostly do it right these days, but 2D pipelines are lagging behind. Photoshop only performs blending correctly if you use a linear colour space like Lab. Presumably they don't fix it for RGB because that would annoy a lot of people.

It's much easier to state a contrast ratio for print media. All you have to do is find the ratio between the reflectivity of your darkest colour and the reflectivity of your lightest colour. Granted, this will depend on the type of ink (and the type of paper, if tinted or unbleached), but those are parameters you can control. It's so much harder to get meaningful values when you're not in control of the picture reproduction, as is the case for an electronic display.

When designers state contrast ratios for sRGB hex values, do they take the nonlinear nature of sRGB values into account? Because if they don't, those contrast ratios don't work as expected. Actually, it's even worse, because you have to know the contrast ratio of the display in order to find the real contrast ratio, and that's only representative if you're viewing the display in a pitch black room where it doesn't reflect any light.

@DaveHiggins Wikipedia did tell me it was used for that purpose historically. I also thought radiation treatment using literal bits of radium was a historical thing. Don't they use machines to emit focused radiation these days?

@SuperFloppies Yes, I figured so much, based on the whole "having to make drugs to pay for medical treatment" premise I read somewhere, together with the table of elements in the title card.

Does barium bromide figure prominently in the plot for [Br]eaking [Ba]d? Because if it doesn't, every chemist watching that show is going to be a bit blueballed by the end of it. "Where's my barium bromide?!"

@debbie Well, it was a multilayered joke about Texas once being a part of Mexico (the name Texas is of Spanish origin), political correctness, the unlikeliness of Scottish-Mexicans being a large ethnic group, and the hilarity that would ensue from combining the traditional cultures of Scotland and Mexico.
