I really hate troubleshooting problems with HDMI. Much of the time, there's nothing you can do because it's a hardware compatibility issue. This shouldn't be happening so many years into the existence of the HDMI standard.

We never had such problems with RCA/SCART and component video. It just sort of worked, and on the rare occasion that it didn't, you wouldn't be left staring at a blank screen. It would usually just look sort of fuzzy.

@radiocaravan I saw a Mastodon user say "Hey, nerds, I have a nerd question for you", and if I know my nerds right, they'll help this user instead of stopping to think about the tone they're being addressed in. Bullying and social isolation tends to do that to a person. You don't know how to set personal boundaries.

My Denon AVR receiver is suddenly saying that my cable box HDMI signal is "unknown", and there's no audio. It was working the last time I tested it. What the hell?

I don't like it very much when non-nerds use the word nerd.

@wilbr @mrjunge Europe wasn't so nice a century or two ago either. I mean, pretty much every country that had the power to do so tried to colonise Africa. The difference might be that Americans as a people got exposed to the dirty side of colonial culture to a greater degree than people living in the home countries themselves. Few slaves were brought to Europe, so we never really had it as part of our culture. The colonies did, however.

@regnskog Det gjelder nok ikke hele, haha. Artikkelen uttrykker jo bekymring for en bestemt aldersgruppe. Det impliserer at det ikke nødvendigvis er noe stort problem ellers.

Oi... Jeg trodde ikke så unge elever hadde noen sperrer for å søke ting opp på engelsk. Det norskspråklige Internett er jo patetisk lite i forhold til det engelskspråklige, og halvparten av alle opplysningene på det norske ser ut til å ligge på babyverden.no...

Du kommer ikke langt med bare norsk, og bør helst kunne engelsk flytende på høyt nivå for å virkelig kunne utnytte Internett.

I had a "nightmare" where I kept buying iPhones and every morning I would wake up with a phone on my pillow and I'd type on it, and then I'd notice a chipped-off corner, and the next minute the whole phone would start to warp and then disintegrate. The final moments of the dream was me sadly looking for my spare Android phone because I had run out of money for buying iPhones...

@kmckaig It's never going to happen. The political establishment will resist with with claw and tooth. The public will reject it as pipe dreams.

I also don't feel happy about paying for a system that has humiliated me every time I've needed its assistance. A cold and uncaring system, frictionless only to people who conform to it perfectly. I avoid touching the system as much as possible, instead relying on my network to survive. I paid for bariatric surgery out of my own pocket to avoid dealing with the public health system. So, yeah, due to this, I do not happily pay taxes.

I'm not against the idea of taxation for the sake of the common good per se, but if you view the government as a generic large organisation, it's not a pleasant sight. At the top are well-paid executives, and beneath them are a gray mass of bureaucrats who get punished if they make a mistake, but no reward if they excel at their job, and it's an inefficient organisation, because if you spend too much money, you can always invent a new tax. I don't feel happy about paying for that.
