@CobaltVelvet Some of us learn to distinguish earlier in life than others, mostly because we are at the wrong end of the gun...

"Strong men" are at least visible.

A more pernicious type of person are people who cultivate an image of kindness.

I remember seeing a bit of footage of Obama about to get his picture taken. He put on an instantly convincing smile in a split second. It disturbed me a bit, because he can put that smile on any time he wants, and it looks completely genuine...

@CobaltVelvet There's a thing there and it doesn't seem to go away, despite claims to the contrary. I can't explain exactly what it's there for or its exact nature, but it's a thing, and it's very noticable, because whatever it is, I don't seem to possess it?

@CobaltVelvet I harbor this suspicion that a large number of women are unable to distinguish between the nasty kind and the "will make for a strong and wise father" kind. It would also seem to me that there is such a thing as wanting a thing that's bad for you. I mean, there's a thing there that I can't explain, but Family Guy basically boiled it down to a joke about women wanting to be treated bad because this shows them that the guy is strong, or something fucked up line that...

Usually, when women talk about how they like confidence in a man, I think back to the sort of guys I've seen women drool over, and what they call confidence is basically something like a sort of virile snottiness; a combination of masculinity, aggression and superiority that I personally find extremely unpalatable. This nastiness is commonly found in various popular, successful or powerful men. I suspect it's where the whole "You find me repulsive, don't you?" thing comes from. They know.

@CobaltVelvet I don't think such people exist in order to benefit society, except perhaps as breeding stock and women's playthings, because they usually have extremely good physiques. Also, their aggressive and dominant traits and popularity probably make them useful as coordinators of group efforts, for example warfare or hunting. However, that doesn't mean that I have to like them...

When I see successful good looking men, I always wonder who they bullied in school. Whenever I'm in the vicinity of such people, I'm immediately repulsed. They typically ooze with snottiness, and if you ever catch them hitting on women, slightly drunk, they are extra nasty.

In my experience, the biggest dicks I knew in school tended to end up in the higher status occupations later in life. The most intolerable snot in my class became a professional soccer player. He was an extremely competitive guy who always knew what he wanted, and of course he had the face and physique of a model. I'm sure he got laid quite a bit, despite being the last person on earth to deserve it.

Apparently, the main cause of bullying is something called proactive aggression, a type of aggression associated with positive emotions in the aggressor, and intended to boost the aggressor's status, sense of power (males) or group cohesion (both sexes). Proactive aggressors are usually good at getting others to join them in an activity, and are often quite popular. Some claim the trait is adaptive: While it makes one more likely to commit crimes, it also boosts one's chances of success.

@randynose My main motivator seems to be obsession. I can lift a mountain if I'm obsessed. However, this obsession works like a laser. It focuses on one thing with overwhelming force, but not for very long. The laser is either on or off. There is no intermediate setting, and it fizzles out relatively quickly.

@randynose My first few months in a new job are usually a breeze and I'm very productive, but then I slow down. I'm not really working because I want to anymore, I'm just there to perform tasks in return for money, and I'm not put together to operate in that way. I must have some natural interest in what I'm doing.

@randynose All of this makes it very difficult to work for others. I often feel a need to take a nap if I'm working on a hard problem, which is usually not a practical proposition when you're at a desk in an office. I have all these little quirks and hangups that make life difficult, and sometimes I'm unable to work around them. In my 20s, I was fired repeatedly because I didn't do my work. In my 30s, I have started quitting instead.

@randynose A steady job that earns a steady income that I'm able to stay in for longer than 6-12 months. My ability to do mental work is unreliable because I rely on inspiration to solve problems, and if the task is not inspiring, I can no longer think. My energy levels are also very spotty. I also have a limited capacity for listening to other people talk. It wears me out quickly and I start daydreaming.

@randynose I think it's about being in the right place at the right time. But it's also about being the right kind of person. I seem to have all these quirks that make it difficult to earn a steady income. Every personality trait I have seems designed to prevent me from having an ordinary career.

@randynose If there is, she most certainly hasn't visited me or anyone I know. I can't say that I've been very lucky, nor can I say that my family's been very lucky, and neither can I say that my friends have been very lucky.

They always gloss over the part of the bio where the famous person miraculously gets a break. It always just happens out of the blue, as if the good luck fairy descended from the sky and waved a magic wand.
