I'm not saying this is very pleasant to think about. I'm also not saying that people who would otherwise get shot shouldn't get asylum.

What I'm saying is that I decidedly don't want this to have any consequences for me, because I had absolutely nothing to do with it.

@Mainebot I find that we are too fond of victimising people in developing countries instead of holding them accountable and giving them agency.

@Mainebot The overall attitude of the population of that country just seemed like an extremely bad starting point for improving the system, and no one was forcing them to be that way. I generally take the position that the fate of a country depends a great deal on its people, and their willingness to make a change.

@Mainebot No one wants to, but it wouldn't be the first time in history that a revolt toppled a corrupt regime. It has happened here in Europe many times, and no, it didn't come cheap.

When I lived in the Philippines, I lost all illusions that developing countries want a democracy. They would vote on politicians based on who they were related to, and based on how big the bribes they received were. Bribing was commonplace, and often the only way of getting things done.

You're powerless to fix it? You are too poor to afford bread? Let me tell you a little story about the French peasants who could...

They use every possible tactic to game the immigration system because they have heard that you get free money if you go to Norway. There are trafficking operations that offer fake papers, and plenty of people who are desperate for better opportunities.

If your country is a mess, the correct course of action is to organise to fix it, openly or clandestine, violently or peacefully. Don't want to? Well, there's your problem right there, and there's your reason to stay. To fix that problem.

They give 100.000 kroner to a violent islamist. Meanwhile, I have to use a credit card to pay my taxes because I managed to make a little money last year but am unemployed now.

The welfare system used to be unobtrusive and simple to access. Now they want to know everything about you. Immigrants abusing the system forced them to fuck it up

I'm sympathetic to the struggles of immigrants, but I bloody hate all the opportunistic fraudsters who sneak in with the refugees.

@Mac_CZ In Norway, this would be entirely uncontroversial and ordinary, with the archaic H in the spelling being the only unusual thing about it. Very few people have names like Odin or Frigg, but Odin does seem to be a popular name for cats...

@mjjzf We have those as well, but they are different. You'd never have a name like Tor-Bjørn or Thor-Bjørn written with a hyphen. Only certain names are used wirh hyphens, typically a one-syllable name followed by a two-syllable name, for example Bjørn-Tore and Stein-Kåre. For girls, you sometimes see 1/3 or 2/3, like Lill-Torill or Mette-Marit. These seem to be unwritten rules, and certainly wouldn't appear in any grammar book.

@ben With nerds, it's hard to know. Sometimes, they get quite serious about these things.

@Ricardus I was looking for a cat especially suited to keep indoors, and as it turns out, what you want is a bit of a dimwitted tame animal who is dependent on you and isn't smart enough to want to escape... It kind of feels like they took cats and brainwashed the cattiness put of them. I had an awesome cat before this one, but he needed activity so I let him go outside, where he was run over by cars.
