OOP is actually the feature I use the least in a language like JS. I inherit a few methods here and there, but most of my objects just serve as key-value maps with utility functions attached to them, and the OOP becomes syntactical sugar more than anything else.

No, people don't hate you. It's actually worse: They think you're okay, but they don't really care about you.
Unless you have something they want, why would they care?

I don't think gender discrimination is taught. I wasn't taught it, but I still catch myself being more careful around men than women, because men are more intimidating. Treading carefully around men is self-preservation. Treading carefully around women is a voluntary decision.
Women in managerial positions should not take it personally when people call them names behind their backs. Their male counterparts are also called names behind their backs. That's the fate of managers everywhere.

One of the things that hurts Lisp is that there isn't one Lisp, but several competing dialects. Common Lisp tries to be the standard one, but I find it rather hard to like, and would rather use something like Clojure. Unfortunately, they differ even on the basics. Lisp has CAR and CDR, while Clojure has "first" and "rest", so even basic list processing code can't be reused verbatim.

@Alastair At the moment, I'm taking jobs I normally wouldn't take, and am in fact permitting people to ask me such questions. However, if they want me to actually take a look at their computer, they should pay me for that.

Still patiently waiting for the Middle East to show us that they are in fact *not* violent and aggressive people who ruthlessly slaughter infidels and critics before dinner. Go ahead and call me prejudiced, racist or whatever, but the Saudis, and pretty much every other group in the region, are *not* exactly coming across as friendly, civilised and peaceful people.

Every time I do business with this guy, it always ends up with him extending favours to me, and then expecting favours back in addition to what I was paid for.

So there's always this complicated balancing game going on. How much is being allowed to install a sign on a fence worth versus doing a job for him? I mean, the sign hasn't made me a single cent yet despite being there for a week, so to me, it's currently worthless, but he of course feels he did me a favour. Doesn't cost him one cent to let me do that, though...

Oh, and of course, a few days prior to asking me for this favour, he said I was welcome to install a sign to promote for my business on his fence next to the road.

For example, I'm doing a job for him to install a network in a building, and he's paying for that. Since he thinks I'm overcharging him, he asks me to check out the network in his house free of charge, which I foolishly did because his Polish electrician "thinks he's a nice guy" and "I should help him out". Yesterday, he called me to ask which computer monitor to buy, and now "his icons won't appear" and he wants me to troubleshoot for free.

My landlord keeps putting me in awkward situations by constantly trading favours and money back and forth. It's impossible to judge how much or how little is owed by any party at any given time because you can't put a price tag on everything.

Since the surgery, my tastes have changed subtly. I still like most of the same foods, but there's a tendency toward keeping things simple.

@clacke Perhaps the handover was a bit rougher than I could recall. Such anti-corruption committees are always a dubious business. Their main purpose seems to be to get rid of competition.

@clacke As far as I can tell, nobody was *upset* by this handover in power. It was all deliberate. No protests prompted it, no one got overthrown, no one even lost an election. Doesn't sound like a recipe for change to me.

@clacke I don't know about everyone else, but my feeling was that it's just the handing of the torch from an elder member of the Saudi establishment to a younger one. I didn't expect anything revolutionary, just like you wouldn't expect that in a Western democracy either, because people don't like fast change.

Saudi Arabia's killing of Jamal Khashoggi doesn't exactly improve my impression of the Middle East, which wasn't great to begin with. Every time a country with a poor human rights record seems to have improved things, and there wasn't a regime change, it always turns out to be a lie in order to do business with the West. We keep falling for it too.
